Here’s to 2022, the year that Covid and Trump went away—or not. While we’re still dealing with variants of each, the latest trip around the sun was filled with such notable events as when the queen died, Bob Saget died, Serena Williams retired, JLo and Ben Affleck got married, Russia invaded Ukraine, Musk, Twitter, Wordle.

As it has done every December since 2013, digital agency Beutler Ink is recapping the past year’s news and entertainment in a single Where’s Waldo?-style illustration that it is sharing on its website and social-media channels. Each edition features a different artist and theme—from a Wes Anderson-style diorama to Blade Runner-esque dystopia to Garden of Earthly Delights—but they all reflect hours and hours of obsessive pop-culture sleuthing.

This year, D.C-based Beutler Ink chose Jillian Goeler, a wildly talented illustrator, who used her expertise with minimalistic shapes and retro lettering to bring this project to vivid life with nearly 80 unique depictions

But before an illustrator gets to work, Beutler Ink’s team must narrow down a list of some 200 events to a manageable 80. It compiles a list of included depictions and gives broad direction for setting, arrangement, and specific depictions yet works collaboratively with the guest artist to allow their vision to shine through.

“As a creative agency, we believe in the power of storytelling,” said agency president William Beutler. “By creating a single, densely packed illustration, we’re able to tell the story of the year that was—dozens of stories, in fact. This project gives us the opportunity to invite the audience to look back, showing the people, places, and pop culture that shaped the year. It also gives us the chance to partner with and showcase a new guest designer each year. Our motto is “We find your story and help you tell it,” and “Here’s To” is how we find and tell the story of each year.
